About Us

My photo
The title for our blog came from the saying "thinking outside the box", which means to think differently, unconventionally or from a new perspective. "Enjoy your choices and enjoy what you do. Never let a day go by without being thankful for the fact that you get to be here in the first place." Hopefully this blog will help family and friends to stay a little closer to us even though were thousands of miles apart; as well as to share in our trials, daily life adventures and traveling experiences.

Documentation In Amsterdam

We took a trip into Amsterdam to get Ella's passport, and social security card. We also had to register her birth as international. It was so nice to walk up to the American Embassy and see the good old American flag flying out front. Of course we had to go through security. I think it was about like what it would be even if we were in the U.S. The perks of having a baby though....we were told to go to the head of the line because it was raining and security started outside before you were allowed to enter the building. It was so pleasant to be surrounded by English speaking people. Although people here do speak English, it is not always correct and doesn't sound as clear as home. At the embassy though, it sounded just like we were home! We also didn't feel uncomfortable for speaking English. Sometimes here it is weird because when the Dutch speak we don't always know what they are saying, but almost everyone understands when Doug and I speak to each other. You never feel like you can have a private conversation like the Dutch can to each other.

After spending about one hour to hand in the paperwork and take our oath, we took a little walk around the area. When we do happen to go to Amsterdam it is always the same area, so we took advantage of checking out the new scenery. We happened to come across this really cool piece of art near a few of the popular museums. It was definitely a popular place to have your picture taken and we had to wait quite some time to get Doug and Ella's picture. We even had some fun with it!
